“Luke,” the man said, “this is Coach Knight.”His voice had grown fainter, but the intimidating tenor of Bobby Knight, the former basketball coach, was still there. Epplin had sent Knight a copy of his book, “Our Team,” after learning that he was a huge fan of the Cleveland baseball team, now called the Guardians. So he tracked down Knight’s address, sent him a copy of the book and included his contact information. Epplin, who grew up in a household with strong ties to the University of Illinois, a sworn enemy of Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers, was surprised to hear from Knight. He was also slightly concerned about which way the conversation would go: Knight sounded frail, but he was known as a chair-throwing, unrepentant, volcanic personality on the basketball court.

In the hours after the news of Bobby Knight’s death at age 83, the polite euphemism machine was in predictable overdrive, the legendary chair-tossing college basketball coach generously eulogized as fiery, controversial, and of course, the mother of all posthumous genteelisms, complicated. Knight would have been amused by such restraint. This was a man who publicly asked to be buried upside down, in order for his many critics to kiss his posterior. Except he didn’t say posterior, he used the pithier, three-letter term, which was Bobby Knight, effortlessly brusque and vigorously himself, through his many achievements and occasional episodes of self-destruction.

But on that winter night in 1985 even Knight's mother, Hazel, sensed something was different as she watched the scene. In the years following the chair-throwing game, former players told stories of Knight's practices, with some alleging physical, verbal or emotional abuse. The chair stopped near the sideline and Reid helped retrieve it, linking him with Knight for college basketball eternity. Longtime public address announcer Chuck Crabb had the unenviable task of telling fans Knight had been ejected. The historic run-up in home prices during the first two years of the pandemic gave homeowners record amounts of new home equity. Homeowner equity peaked at $17.6 trillion collectively last May, after home prices jumped 45% since the start of the pandemic. At the end of September, prices were still up 41%, and equity was still quite strong. Home prices fell in September on a month-to-month basis for the third month in a row, though the decline wasn’t as steep as in July and August. As of the end of September, the amount of collective equity available to borrowers while still keeping 20% equity in the home fell by $1.17 trillion since May.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Hornets guard James Bouknight was found intoxicated and unconscious and holding a gun with his vehicle in drive before he was arrested on Sunday morning on DWI charges, according to Charlotte Mecklenburg County Police. Police said they responded to reports that a person was passed out in his vehicle in a Charlotte parking lot Sunday morning, blocking the traffic way. According to the police report, officers saw Bouknight unconscious inside the vehicle with the vehicle running and in drive. Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to awaken Bouknight for approximately an hour using a public address system, blasting airhorns and using lights. Officer Craig Warren said in the report that Bouknight had glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.
